CHAPTER 10

Amy would have been quite happy to go home after the hairdressers and leave her shopping trip for another day, but Laura had launched herself into her latest project with a ruthlessness that left Amy understanding why Robert so often took refuge up in the loft with his trains.

Her sister seemed to have spent most of the morning barking ‘No, Amy,’ as if she was a puppy that was being trained to the leash and that peremptory command had all too often been elaborated with comments like. “You’ve already got half a dozen of those and none of them suit you.”

Amy had kept wanting to protest that she liked her choices, but she’d had just enough sense left to keep her mouth shut and keep reminding herself that she was here to be shaken out of her rut. Besides, she could return anything she didn’t like as long as she kept the receipts so it couldn’t hurt to try new things.

She touched her hair as she noticed her reflection in one of the mirrors that were strategically placed around the shop whose owner Laura was interrogating about sizes and colours and how quickly clothes could be ordered because she was still a little bemused by the way that it swung against her face in a simple, layered bob with a wispy fringe. Her transforming genius had sat her under heat lamps to prove his claim that all she’d have to do was wash and comb it because the cut and colour would do all the work for her and he’d been proved triumphantly right.

“It looks lovely.” Laura reaffirmed as she returned to her original target and it wasn’t much of a relief that her voice had lost the initial edge of amazement because she was carrying a pair of jeans that had to be far too tight for someone who was built for comfort rather than sleekness. Seconds later the assistant offered them a crimson top that was tighter and lower cut than anything that Amy would have considered when she’d been a teenager, let alone almost thirty years later. Laura gave it a thorough examination before favouring it with a nod that was far more approving than Amy usually rated and adding it to the pile of things to be tried on before she made a final decision.

“Are you sure?” She protested, but she didn’t know why she was bothering because her sister was always certain about everything and had a very nasty habit of being right.

Laura swept through Westerham’s finest shops like a well-organised hurricane and by the time they got back into the car after filling the boot with bags, Amy had added yet another job to add to her ever-growing to-do’ list For once she was looking forward to ticking it off because she’d be clearing out all the old clothes from her cupboard, bagging them up, and taking them to a charity shop.

The jeans that she’d been so reluctant to try on had fitted so well that she’d ended up buying three pairs and hadn’t wanted to change out of them.
